Vision Components at CVPR 2024: Our trade fair highlights

New VC MIPI® cameras with GMSL2 and miniature vision systems for intelligent and autonomous devices

Vision Components presents its MIPI CSI-2 Camera lineup with an optional GMSL2 interface for data transmissions with cables up to 10 meters long at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Conference 17-21 June in Seattle. Further highlights are the world’s first MIPI camera with Sony IMX900 global shutter image sensor and miniature Vision Systems for autonomous robots and smart devices. The manufacturer also shows its VC Stereo Cam for 3D and dual-camera applications. It features onboard real time image processing based on the VC Power SoM FPGA module, and transfers the results in the MIPI data stream to a higher-level CPU.

Data transmission via coax cable

The VC MIPI Cameras with GMSL2 interface combine the advantages of the ultra-compact and easy-to-integrate VC MIPI® Cameras with an option to support cable lengths of up to 10 meters. When connecting via the MIPI CSI-2 interface with standard FPC cables, the embedded cameras can be integrated and connected at a maximum distance of 20 cm from the processor board. The new SerDes adapter is integrated into the design of the MIPI cameras and is permanently attached to the module. This ensures maximum robustness in industrial and professional applications. The tiny form factor of the cameras is completely retained and only the depth of the modules increases by a few millimeters. Coaxial cables with MMCX connectors can be used for fast data transmission via the Gigabit Multimedia Serial Link Interface GMSL2. A connector adapter enables connection with Fakra-C ports.

The VC MIPI IMX296 is the first camera to be available in the GMSL version. All other cameras with the approximately 50 different image sensors in the VC portfolio will follow shortly. In addition, there is also a new board that converts the serial GMSL signal back to MIPI CSI-2. With this stamp-sized board, the cameras can be connected to most common processor boards via the standard MIPI interface and the familiar FPC cables. Functional models can thus be realized in the shortest possible time and using all the advantages of the MIPI interface.

First MIPI camera with Sony IMX900 image sensor

Also new at CVPR is the VC MIPI IMX900 MIPI Camerathat integrates the high resolution 3.2 megapixel Sony IMX900 global shutter image sensor into an ultra-compact, industrialgrade and longterm available camera design for the first time. With its superior light sensitivity up to near-infrared (NIR), high dynamic range and wide field of view, the camera module with MIPI CSI-2 interface is ideal for applications in robotics, smart AI devices and for applications such as finding and reading barcodes and markers. The VC MIPI IMX900 will be available from first quarter of 2024.

Stereo camera for Embedded Vision

For 3D imaging and dual-camera applications, Vision Components presents the VC Stereo Cam.. It can be flexibly configured for a wide range of OEM projects. The Stereo Cam is based on the powerful VC Power SoM FPGA accelerator board, which preprocesses large data volumes in real time and transfers the results in the MIPI data stream to a higher-level CPU. This allows users the free choice of their processor platform. The FPGA is open for customer programming. Vision Components’ extensive groundwork for stereo image processing with synchronized triggering and optional disparity matching saves users development effort, time and cost. The manufacturer also supports project development, offering ready-made FPGA designs for applications like object recognition and specific tasks like 3D point cloud generation.

Developed and produced in Germany

The VC MIPI® Cameras and embedded vision systems are developed and produced in Ettlingen, Germany, with best-in-class quality and designed for the requirements of industrial volume applications. On request, the company also develops cameras with special image sensors, including those that do not natively support a MIPI interface. VC also adapts cables and connectors or customizes MIPI cameras with individual form factor or sensor position. On request, fully assembled and calibrated cameras including optics can also be supplied.
