A 3D camera system or 3D vision system is a technology that captures and processes visual data in three dimensions. While conventional 2D cameras can only record the width and height of an object, a 3D camera system adds the depth dimension. This enables a spatial representation that provides precise information about the distance and shape of an object.
3D cameras and 3D vision systems are based on special cameras or sensors. In stereo cameras, two image sensors are arranged at a distance from each other, similar to a person's eyes. The images from both cameras are fused and compared in order to calculate depth information. 
 
In the laser triangulation method, another method for determining 3D data, a laser line is projected onto an object; a camera records the position of the reflected light in order to calculate distances. The data can be used to determine the position in space, distances or size and volume of objects.
